Burgers pulled in UK after tests reveal horse

Darren Staples / Reuters, file

In 2007, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay called for British people to start eating horse meat, saying it was healthy and "packed with protein."

By Ian Johnston, Staff Writer, NBC News

LONDON -- The idea of eating horse meat has been described as the ?last taboo? of English cooking.

So one of Britain's leading supermarkets, Tesco, was doubtless horrified at having to post a statement saying that horse DNA had been found in hamburgers on sale in the U.K. and Ireland.

Tim Smith, Tesco?s group technical director, said the store apologized ?sincerely for any distress? caused.

?We immediately withdrew from sale all products from the supplier in question,? he stressed. "The presence of illegal meat in our products is extremely serious.? Our customers have the right to expect that food they buy is produced to the highest standards."

The discovery was made by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, which said it had carried out a study to examine the ?authenticity? of several beef burger, beef meal and salami products.

The results were alarming.?Ten of the 27 beef burgers tested were found to contain horse DNA, with nine containing only "very low levels."

?In one sample from Tesco, the level of horse DNA indicated that horse meat accounted for approximately 29 percent relative to the beef content,? the FSAI said.

Twenty-three of the 27 burgers also tested positive for pig DNA, the FSAI said, and 21?out of 31 ?beef meal products? tested were also found to contain pig DNA, but no horse DNA was discovered.

'No clear explanation'
The FSAI said that the beef burgers with horse DNA were produced at two processing plants in Ireland and one in the U.K., and were sold at Tesco and four other outlets, Dunnes Stores, Lidl, Aldi and Iceland.

Alan Reilly, the FSAI?s chief executive, said in a statement ?there is no clear explanation at this time for the presence of horse DNA in products emanating from meat plants that do not use horse meat in their production process.??

?In Ireland, it is not in our culture to eat horse meat and therefore, we do not expect to find it in a burger,? he noted.

?Likewise, for some religious groups or people who abstain from eating pig meat, the presence of traces of pig DNA is unacceptable,? he added.

Reilly stressed the products did ?not pose any food safety risk and consumers should not be worried.?

In 2007, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay called for British people to start eating horse meat, saying it was healthy and "packed with protein" with a "slightly gamey" flavor, The Telegraph newspaper reported.?The idea failed to take off.

In Britain, two consumers largely spoke for the nation when they told ITV News of their shock and horror.

"I'd be fuming if I found out there was horse meat in my burgers -- obviously," one man said.

"It's just not normal," a woman added. "Fine we eat cows and everything, but horse meat? No."

Jessica Stark, director of communications for World Horse Welfare, said that campaign group was concerned about horses in Europe who are driven to be slaughtered in journeys that can last several days. She said WHW did not oppose the eating of horses, but wanted to see journey times restricted to nine to 12 hours.

She said in some countries horses were seen as companions or pets and were "revered," while other nations, such as Italy and France, saw them simply as livestock.

Asked if she had eaten horse, Stark said "Gosh no, not that I'm aware of." Asked if she would, she replied "No I would not ... it's a personal choice."

DCM Dealer software platform mines social media for stock sentiment, Wall Street licks its chops

In this episode of "What could possibly go wrong?!", allow us to introduce you to DCM Dealer. Billed as an "online trading platform," this here project was whipped up by the same London-based investment outfit (DCM Capital) that went belly-up after losing some $40 million in assets in just one month during the summer of 2011. Granted, that was a pretty tough time in the market, and it did manage to squeeze out a 1.9 percent gain in the period it was open, but it's still worth keeping in mind. Now, the firm is hoping to catch a second wind with a tool that mines Twitter, Facebook, and the whole of social media in order to pick up clues about the public's view on a stock. Reportedly, it'll spit out real-time ratings from 0 (negative) to 100 (positive), giving investors yet another "leading indicator" on what to invest in flip for a quick buck.

Founder Paul Hawtin confesses: "This is not some kind of holy grail of buy-sell signals that's guaranteed to make you money. This is an additional layer of market information...markets are driven by greed and fear, so if you can understand fear and quantify it in real-time, you could use that to protect yourself." We'll leave it to the 99 percent to comment on the idea below.

Man accused of trying to rob store, then calling mom for ride

Zachariah Dalton Howard called his Mom for a ride after allegedly trying to rob a store(Okaloosa County Sheriff's??Just because the town is called "Niceville" doesn?t mean they?ll patiently wait for your mom to pick you up after you tried to rob the local convenience store.

The Sun-Sentinel reports that 22-year-old Zachariah Dalton Howard is charged with attempting to rob a Thumbs-Up Convenience store in the Florida town (home of the Boggy Bayou Mullet Festival), when he told the clerk he had a gun. But he left the store without any cash after the clerk showed him the empty store register.

Howard then walked over to a nearby Winn-Dixie store where he called his mom and asked for a ride home, the report says.

You can read a full copy of the Okaloosa County Sheriff?s Office report here (PDF).

According to the report, Howard told police that he initially left his mom?s home to ?let off some steam? and didn?t set out to rob the Thumbs-Up but ?came up with the idea while walking there.?

As authorities deemed Howard did not in fact bring a gun into the store, he was formally charged with ?attempted robbery without a weapon.?

Nurses Fired for Refusing Flu Shot

An Indiana hospital has fired eight employees, including at least three veteran nurses, after they refused mandatory flu shots, stirring up controversy over which should come first: employee rights or patient safety. The hospital imposed mandatory vaccines, responding to rising concerns about the spread of influenza.

Ethel Hoover wore all black on her last day of work as a nurse in the critical care unit at Indiana University Health Goshen Hospital. She said she was in "mourning" because she would have been at the hospital 22 years in February, and she's only called out of work four or five times in her whole career , she said.

"This is my body. I have a right to refuse the flu vaccine," Hoover, 61, told ABCNews.com. "For 21 years, I have religiously not taken the flu vaccine, and now you're telling me that I believe in it."

More than 15,100 flu cases have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since Sept. 30, including 16 pediatric deaths. Indiana's flu activity level is considered high, according to the CDC, which last month announced that the flu season came a month earlier than usual.

Click here to read how flu has little to do with weather.

Flu During Pregnancy Linked to Autism: Study Watch Video

When Hoover first heard about the mandate, she said she didn't realize officials would take it so seriously. She said she filed two medical exemptions, a religious exemption and two appeals, but they were all denied. The Dec. 15 flu shot deadline came and went. Hoover's last day of employment was Dec. 21.

Fellow nurse Kacy Davis said she and her colleagues were "horrified" over Hoover's firing, calling her their "go-to" nurse and a "preceptor."

"It was a good place to work," Hoover said. "We've worked together all these years. We're like a family."

The hospital said in a statement that it implemented the mandate to promote patient safety based on recommendations from the American Medical Association, the American Nurses Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It announced the mandate in September. Of the hospital's 26,000 employees statewide, 95 percent complied. That means 1,300 employees did not comply, but only eight were fired.

"IU Health's top priority is the health and wellbeing of our patients," said hospital spokeswoman Whitney Ertel. "Participation in the annual Influenza Patient Safety Program is a condition of employment with IU Health for the health and safety of the patients that we serve, and is therefore required."

The CDC recommends flu shots for everyone older than six months of age. Dr. William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., said hospital patients are especially vulnerable to flu complications because their bodies are already weakened.

"I cannot think of a reason for any health care professional to decline influenza immunization that's valid," said Schaffner, a former president of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, adding that people with egg allergies may have to avoid the flu shot to prevent anaphylactic shock, but even that hurdle has been remedied. The Food and Drug Administration approved an egg-free vaccine in November.

Schaffner said invalid excuses to avoid the shot include being afraid of needles and simply promising to stay home when they're sick. Patients now have the option of a vaccine nasal spray if they want to avoid needles. And since flu victims become contagious before they start to feel sick, they can get patients sick even if they stay home when they have symptoms.

Over the last several years, hospitals have been moving toward mandatory vaccinations because many only have 60 percent vaccination rates, Schaffner said. He is leading an effort for a similar mandate at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Companies, that are essentially famous to be clever car-making brands such as Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Fiat are also aggressively posterior opportunities in a application automobile space. And those who had missed out on a direct bang for tiny cars 4 years ago ? companies such as Volkswagen, Renault, Nissan, and Honda ? are not distant behind. Traditional marketplace personality Mahindra Mahindra would not lay still either, with a array of launches lined adult in a subsequent few years.

The success of new launches like Renault Duster, Mahindra Quanto, XUV500, Tata Safari Storme and Maruti Ertiga has apparently stirred other companies to burst on to a bandwagon.

The fad is understandable.

The share of UVs in a newcomer automobile space in 2005-06 stood during 15 per cent, this has grown to 20 per cent in 2012. Presently each fifth automobile sole in India is a UV. While a automobile marketplace has grown during only one per cent, application automobile sales have jumped by 62 per cent so distant in 2012.

In a initial 8 months of a year that only ended, a UV attention sole roughly a same series of vehicles it did in a whole of a prior year.

Thanks to extended families and tendencies to transport in groups, many analysts feel that India will declare a same bang in direct for such vehicles as was seen progressing for compress cars.

Mahindra has been a personality in a UV space for a past several years with a 47.5 per cent (as of November) marketplace share. The company, that bought determining seductiveness in Korea?s SsangYong Motor Company, is building mini-and mid-sized SUVs for itself and vast SUVs for a Korean company.

With a launch of so many products, a marketplace share of MM is approaching to be hit, yet a association is not too endangered about it. It currently has 6 products in a UV category, a limit by any manufacturer.

Pawan Goenka, boss (automotive and plantation apparatus sectors) Mahindra Mahindra, says, a UV shred will grow subsequent year also during a faster gait than that of a industry. ?Therefore, a marketplace share for a association like Mahindra will really come down. But volumes will grow. In any case, when we have so many players entrance in, it is unfit to have 60-62 per cent marketplace share?.

Goenka says losing marketplace share isn?t a problem in an attention that is flourishing during 50-60 per cent. ?If we had not invested in 2008, we would have been great today. That investment in products such as Quanto and XUV500 is profitable division today,? he adds.

A Morgan Stanley news says tellurian manufacturers are increasingly changeable their concentration to a Indian UV shred since a normal offered cost are higher, foe is lower, and profitability is better. This is most improved than fighting in a packed hatchback segment.

Companies like Fiat is building a new height for mini- and mid-sized SUVs that will be branded underneath Fiat and a arriving Jeep brands.

Even Honda, that has forged out a clever position for itself in a sedan space with a City, has evinced seductiveness in a UV category.

Hinori Kanayama, boss and arch executive, Honda Cars India, says, a direct for MUV or SUV will increase. The association hasn?t finalised anything though is exploring a choice of a launch in this segment.

?India is a singular marketplace therefore we might have to, like Brio, rise a automobile for a Indian and rising markets. Using one of a existent platforms is one of a options to revoke a expansion period,? he says.

Going by a speed of competition, Kanayama doesn?t have most time left.

Doctors: Blood clot located in Clinton's head

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton developed a blood clot in her head but did not suffer a stroke or neurological damage, her doctors said Monday. They say they are confident that she will make a full recovery.

In a statement that revealed the location of the clot, Clinton's doctors said it is in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. She is being treated with blood thinners to help dissolve the clot, the doctors said, and she will be released once the medication dose has been established.

Clinton, 65, is making excellent progress and is in good spirits, Dr. Lisa Bardack of the Mt. Kisco Medical Group and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi of George Washington University said in a statement.

Clinton, who was spending a second day at a New York hospital, developed the clot after suffering a concussion earlier in December. She had fainted, fallen and struck her head at home while battling a stomach virus, her spokesman said. She has not been seen publicly since Dec. 7.

Phillipe Reines, her spokesman, said her doctors discovered the clot Sunday while performing a follow-up exam on the concussion. She was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Clinton's complication "certainly isn't the most common thing to happen after a concussion" and is one of the few types of blood clots in the skull or head that are treated with blood thinners, said Dr. Larry Goldstein, a neurologist who is director of Duke University's stroke center.

The area where Clinton's clot developed is "a drainage channel, the equivalent of a big vein inside the skull ? it's how the blood gets back to the heart," Goldstein said.

Blood thinners usually are enough to treat the clot and it should have no long-term consequences if her doctors are saying she has suffered no neurological damage from it, Goldstein said.

Clinton had planned to step down as secretary of state at the beginning of President Barack Obama's second term. Whether she will return to work before she resigns remained a question.

Democrats are privately if not publicly speculating: How might her illness affect a decision about running for president in 2016?

After decades in politics, Clinton says she plans to spend the next year resting. She has long insisted she had no intention of mounting a second campaign for the White House four years from now. But the door is not entirely closed, and she would almost certainly emerge as the Democrat to beat if she decided to give in to calls by Democratic fans and run again.

Her age ? and thereby health ? would likely be a factor under consideration, given that Clinton would be 69 when sworn in, if she were elected in 2016. That might become even more of an issue in the early jockeying for 2016 if what started as a bad stomach bug becomes a prolonged, public bout with more serious infirmity.

Not that Democrats are willing to talk openly about the political implications of a long illness, choosing to keep any discussions about her condition behind closed doors. Publicly, Democrats reject the notion that a blood clot could hinder her political prospects.

"Some of those concerns could be borderline sexist," said Basil Smikle, a Democratic strategist who worked for Clinton when she was a senator. "Dick Cheney had significant heart problems when he was vice president, and people joked about it. He took the time he needed to get better, and it wasn't a problem."

It isn't uncommon for presidential candidates' health ? and age ? to be an issue. Both in 2000 and 2008, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., had to rebut concerns he was too old to be commander in chief or that his skin cancer could resurface.

Two decades after Clinton became the first lady, signs of her popularity ? and her political strength ? are ubiquitous.

Obama had barely declared victory in November when Democrats started zealously plugging Clinton as their strongest White House contender four years from now, should she choose to take that leap.

"Wouldn't that be exciting," House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi declared in December. "I hope she goes ? why wouldn't she?"

Even Republicans concede that were she to run, Clinton would be a force to be reckoned with.

"Trying to win that will be truly the Super Bowl," former House Speaker and 2012 GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said in December. "The Republican Party today is incapable of competing at that level."

Americans admire Clinton more than any other woman in the world, according to a Gallup poll released Monday ? the 17th time in 20 years that Clinton has claimed that title. And a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 57 percent of Americans would support Clinton as a candidate for president in 2016, with just 37 percent opposed. Meanwhile, websites have already cropped up hawking "Clinton 2016" mugs and tote bags.

Clinton returned to the U.S. from a trip to Europe, then fell ill with a stomach virus in early December that left her severely dehydrated and forced her to cancel a trip to North Africa and the Middle East. Until then, she had cancelled only two scheduled overseas trips, one to Europe after breaking her elbow in June 2009 and one to Asia after the February 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Her condition worsened when she fainted, fell and suffered a concussion while at home alone in mid-December as she recovered from the virus. It was announced on Dec. 13.

This isn't the first time Clinton has suffered a blood clot. In 1998, midway through her husband's second term as president, Clinton was in New York fundraising for the midterm elections when a swollen right foot led her doctor to diagnose a clot in her knee requiring immediate treatment.

Beyond talk of future politics, Clinton's three-week absence from the State Department has raised eyebrows among some conservative commentators who questioned the seriousness of Clinton's ailment after she cancelled planned Dec. 20 testimony before Congress on the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton had been due to discuss with lawmakers a scathing report on the attack she had commissioned that found serious failures of leadership and management in two State Department bureaus were to blame for insufficient security at the facility. Clinton took responsibility for the incident before the report was released, but she was not blamed. Four officials cited in the report have either resigned or been reassigned.

New Year's Eve 2012: Healthy Ways To Celebrate

New Year's Eve: Endless waterfalls of crisp champagne, party-pumping pop music and the perfect, sequined outfit. Yea, right. In reality, it's usually more like an "open" bar with hour-long waits and watered-down drinks, a stranger spilling a mystery substance down the front of your over-priced outfit -- and, ah yes, January 1's infamous hangover.

This year, why not do things a little differently? Below are eight healthy ways to ring in the New Year. We'll be making our toast to stressing less about this ordinarily high-pressure evening, and celebrating by doing the things that make us feel good, plain and simple. Let us know how you'll be ringing in the new year in the comments below!

  • Dance The Night Away

Three reasons to shake your groove thing this New Year?s Eve: 1.Dancing can burn upwards of 350 calories per hour. 2. Dancing can improve your sense of self -- and make you feel super confident. 3. Dancing may boost your memory and lower your risk for dementia. And a fourth? It's just so fun.

  • Drink ... Responsibly

Many of us toast to the new year and new beginnings. But here at Healthy Living, we're giving you a nudge to keep moderation in mind. You'll reap the health benefits that are tied to alcohol and be able to enjoy the first day of the year without the scary effects that come with overdoing it.

  • Take A Midnight Yoga Class

Downward dog as the clock strikes 12? Why not? Lots of studios offer New Year's Eve yoga classes, so you can bend your way into 2013. You?ll reap the many benefits that yoga has to offer, clear your head and, who knows, maybe even secure that recommitment to yoga you've resolved to for the coming year.

  • Enjoy A Celebratory Smooch

Chances are, you were planning to plant a peck on someone special at midnight. Smooch on! Kissing can increase oxytocin levels, which helps to reduce stress, anxiety and even your blood pressure, Shape reports. You can sneak in a little calorie burning while you're at it: Kissing can burn anywhere from two to six calories per minute. That may seem insignificant, but hey, we'll take it.

  • Run A Race

Maybe 2012 wasn?t your year. While we never recommend running from your problems, running toward a solution -- in this case, a clean slate -- might be your best bet. Whatever your reason (and we?re in full support of running strictly for endorphins' sake) signing up for a midnight run is a great, healthy way to ring in the new year. Many races end with a celebratory glass of bubbly -- so you can still hang on to old traditions while making new ones.

  • Volunteer

While we tend to think about giving back more on Thanksgiving and Christmas, New Year's Eve should be no different. Do some research on local shelters or hospitals that are in need of some extra hands. Besides making the New Year better for others, you'll be happy to know that giving back can help release those feel-good hormones like serotonin, oxytocin and dopamine. You'll remember 2012 as the year you gave back and enter 2013 with some good karma to your name.

  • Host A Potluck

With paper plates. And plastic cups. Take the pressure off serving a perfect, gourmet meal and have all your friends pitch in this year. And since everyone is contributing, you won?t have to worry about specific dietary needs. Plus, you?ll stress less without the thought of dirty dishes looming over your head and you?ll have more time to enjoy quality time with your friends.

  • Have A Healthy Mentality About The Night

Whatever your plans, the most important thing may be to lay off on the pressure. We often hype up New Year?s Eve as the night of all nights, and end up disappointed. This year, why not make an early resolution to be present at your celebration, enjoy the company you keep and see the opportunity that tomorrow brings.

Gettysburg Battlefield issues Facebook challenge

A group takes a tour along Hancock Avenue in this 2008 file photo of the Gettysburg Battlefield. (FILE PHOTO)

The Gettysburg National Military Park has a challenge for you - to visit one lesser-known spot along the battlefield each week in 2013. Dubbed the 52 Footsteps Facebook Challenge, the program will encourage visitors to broaden their knowledge of the Battle of Gettysburg in anticipation of its 150th anniversary.

Each week the GNMP will post a story onto its Facebook page about a unique person involved in Gettysburg's history. It will then ask visitors to find the spot where that particular person once stood, snap a picture of themselves standing there, and then post it to the GNMP Facebook page.

Some of the featured stories will include Thaddeus Stevens, the abolitionist who lived in Gettysburg from 1816 to 1842, Elizabeth Thorn, caretaker of the Evergreen Cemetery who carried out some of the first burials while six months pregnant, and Federico Cavada, a Cuban immigrant who fought with the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry near the Peach Orchard.

For those who don't live in Gettysburg, the GNMP will also offer photo challenges in areas throughout the country. For example, in the week that features John Cassidy, a soldier who was killed by a bullet after it traveled through a Bible and into his heart, participants can either snap a picture at the Angle on Gettysburg's Cemetery Ridge or at his burial site in Philadelphia.

The first challenge will be posted on the GNMP Facebook page on Wed. Jan. 2. To participate,
