Scientists discover evidence of giant panda's population history and local adaptation

Dec. 16, 2012 ? A research team, led by Institute of Zoology of Chinese Academy of Sciences and BGI, has successfully reconstructed a continuous population history of the giant panda from its origin to the present. The findings suggested whereas global changes in climate were the primary drivers in panda population fluctuation for millions of years, human activities were likely to underlie recent population divergence and serious decline. This work reveals a good example for assessing and establishing the best conservation method for other endangered species.

The latest study was published online in Nature Genetics.

The giant panda is the rarest member of the bear family. Looked upon as the ambassador for all endangered species, it is a well-recognized symbol of international wildlife conservation. The giant panda is currently threatened by continued habitat loss, human persecution, among others. Its dietary specialization, habitat isolation, and reproductive constraints have led to a perception that this is a species at an "evolutionary dead end," destined for deterministic extinction in the modern world.

In this study, researchers carried out whole genome resequencing of 34 wild giant pandas and found the current six geographic populations of giant panda could be divided into three genetic populations, including Qinling (QIN), Minshan (MIN) and Qionglai-Daxiangling-Xiaoxiangling-Liangshan (QXL). Through reconstructing giant panda's population history, they found several important evolutionary events such as two population expansions, two bottlenecks and two population divergences.

The giant panda has a very special bamboo diet, while its ancestor was omnivorous or carnivores. As early as about 3 Myr ago, they probably had already completed their dietary swift and pygmy panda emerged with bamboo as its primary diet. The warm and wet weather at that time provided ideal conditions for the spread of bamboo forests that further led to the first population expansion of giant panda. However, about 0.7 Myr ago, the panda population began to decline due to the two largest Pleistocene glaciations happened in China, and its first population bottleneck occurred at about 0.3 Myr ago. During that period, pygmy panda was gradually replaced by another subspecies -- baconi panda that has larger body size.

After the retreat of the Penultimate Glaciations, giant panda's second population expansion happened and it reached its population peak between 30~50 thousand years (kyr) ago. The warm weather in the Greatest Lake Period (30~40 kyr ago) and alpine conifer forest may play an important role in the flourishing of the panda population. However, during the period of last glacial maximum (LGM), the climate was cold, dry, and inhospitable with frequent storms and a dust-laden atmosphere. Under such harsh environment, extensive panda habitats were loss and its second population bottleneck occurred.

The more recent panda population history showed that the panda population separated into Qinling (QIN) and non-QIN populations at about 0.3Myr ago, and then the non-QIN cluster diverged into two populations, the Minshan (MIN) and Qionglai-Daxiangling-Xiaoxiangling-Liangshan (QXL) at about 2.8 KYA ago. Subsequently, the three populations were different in the ways of fluctuation. For example, there was a drastic decline in the QIN, a slight increase in the MIN and a more remarkable growth in the QXL populations.

Researchers identified the signals of panda's local adaptation. They found the largest group of selected genes in these populations was related to sensory system. However, the two genes, Tas2r49 and Tas2r3, were associated with bitter taste and were under directional selection between the QIN and non-QIN populations, showing no signal of directional selection between MIN and QXL populations.

As a form of olfactory communication, odor perception is crucial for reproduction and survival of giant pandas in the dense forest. Researchers found the MIN and QXL populations had fewer directionally selected genes than QIN and non-QIN, suggesting less variation happens in the selection processes between MIN and QXL. They also found the evidence that population fluctuations were driven by global climate shifts, but recent human activities have likely caused population divergence and the serious recent decline.

Shancen Zhao, Project Manager from BGI, said, "We have identified three genetic populations of giant panda for the current six geographic populations lived in western of China. The varied local adaptations found in our study provide invaluable resource for researchers to better select effective conservation methods to rescue the giant panda even other endangered species. The translocation of wild-caught individuals or releasing the captive-bred ones may be a feasible approach. "

Sprint raises offer, to buy Clearwire for $2.2B

(AP) ? Sprint, the country's third-largest cellphone company, said Monday that it will buy out the portion of wireless network operator Clearwire that it doesn't already own after raising its offer price to $2.2 billion.

The deal would give Sprint control of a flailing affiliate, one it depends upon to provide high-speed "Sprint 4G" data services on some of its phones. It would increase Sprint's access to the airwaves, meaning it could boost data speeds in coming years. However, cell towers using Clearwire spectrum have poor range, meaning Sprint may struggle to provide broad coverage.

Sprint Nextel Corp. said it will pay $2.97 per share for the nearly 50 percent stake in Clearwire stock it doesn't already own. A board committee that excluded Sprint appointees approved the offer. The board hadn't approved Sprint's earlier offer of $2.90 per share, or a total of $2.1 billion, which had been made Thursday.

The agreement is a disappointment for Clearwire shareholders, who were hoping that the company would hold out for an even better offer. Some of them could try to stop the deal. The stock fell 47 cents, or 14 percent, to $2.90 in morning trading Monday.

Clearwire Corp., which is based in Kirkland, Wash., was formed by cellular pioneer Craig McCaw to take advantage of an emerging wireless technology, WiMax, which promised higher speeds and lower costs than conventional cellular technology.

Sprint was working on the same technology. In 2008, it rolled those operations into Clearwire, gaining a stake of more than 50 percent. Sprint pays Clearwire for access to its network, which it resells as Sprint 4G, but the technology has been orphaned as other wireless carriers have opted for another fourth-generation technology called LTE. Sprint is now building out its own 4G LTE network. Clearwire has its own plans to build out LTE, but has lacked the funds to do so.

Sprint was also financially strapped, until it agreed in October to sell 70 percent of itself to Softbank Corp. of Japan for $20 billion. Clearwire shares nearly doubled in value when that deal was announced two months ago, as investors guessed that the Softbank deal meant Sprint would buy full control of Clearwire.

Sprint's $2.97-per-share offer for Clearwire is more than twice the stock's closing price of $1.30 on Oct. 10, just before the Sprint-Softbank deal was confirmed.

The Clearwire deal is contingent on the Softbank deal going through. A majority of Clearwire's minority shareholders also need to approve it. Of those, cable companies Comcast Corp. and Bright House Networks, as well as chipmaker Intel Corp. have agreed to vote in favor. They control 13 percent of the shares.

Because Clearwire is closely tied to Sprint, it would be a poor fit for another cellphone company, and there have been no reports of other suitors.

Analyst Christopher King at Stifel Nicolaus said it's likely other shareholders will oppose the deal, arguing that Clearwire is worth much more. That means that final approval "may come down to a vote-counting exercise," he said.

Sprint, which is based in Overland Park, Kan., said it expects both deals to close next summer.

Sprint's stock fell a penny to $5.54 in morning trading Monday.

Declining Foster Care ? a Good Thing or Bad? | Bacon's Rebellion

by James A. Bacon

The departure of a senior social-services administrator in the City of Richmond has prompted an investigation into the city?s foster care program. The number of abuse and neglect petitions filed in the city?s district court has plummeted from 284 two years ago to only 76 by mid-December this year, prompting some to question whether the child welfare system put children at risk as it aimed to reduce the number of foster care cases.

The controversy stems in part from a national reevaluation of child welfare programs. For decades, reports Robert Zullo with the Times-Dispatch, foster children were often shuffled to from home to home, aging out of the system having never established family bonds. The new thinking has been to apply social-service resources to support struggling families before removing the children. Now some social workers are concerned that the pendulum has swung too far and that children are being left in danger with their natural families.

Source: Virginia Performs

Interestingly enough, the downward trend in foster care cases can be seen in a peer analysis with neighboring states conducted by Virginia Performs. Over the past decade, Virginia has had lower foster-care rates (measured by cases per 1,000 children) than North Carolina, Tennessee and Maryland ? and half the rate of the national average.

But there is enormous variation between regions. As might be expected, Northern Virginia, which has the highest incomes, highest education levels and most intact families, has the lowest rate. Southwest Virginia has the highest, with a rate running twice the national average. Central Virginia, which includes the City of Richmond, is slightly lower than the state average.

What does this mean? Does this mean there is less social dysfunction in Virginia than elsewhere? Perhaps. The state poverty rate is significantly lower than the national norm as well. On the other hand, the lower rate of foster care may reflect nothing more than a change in policy in social-services agencies across Virginia. The average wait time for foster care is about 18 months, higher than the national average. If children are waiting to be placed in foster homes, I presume, it means they aren?t being counted in the foster care rates.

Virginia Performs publishes another data set that may shed some light. Virginia happens to have a child abuse/neglect rate that is roughly one-third the national average. If there are fewer instances of child abuse and neglect, that would imply there is less need for foster care in Virginia. As the Virginia Performs website explains, however, ?It is difficult to compare child maltreatment statistics across states because there is great variation in state laws, definitions, standards of evidence, and record keeping. It is estimated that up to 60% of child fatalities are incorrectly reported as accidents or other incidents, rather than as abuse.?

While state and national foster care rates have declined by roughly one third over the past decade, the City of Richmond rate dove by two-thirds in just two years. Those numbers suggest that, in the city at least, the lower rate reflects departmental policy, not the underlying reality of children?s well being. In all likelihood, a large number of Richmond children are being left in domestic situations in which their lives and health are at risk while city officials pursue the latest fad in social-services theory.

Legal aspects of the fiddle thing - Discussion Forums - Fiddle Hangout

I get grief for bringing up legal aspects. ?That is completely unwarranted. ?It is entirely possible to get sucked into a nightmare in the fiddle world. ?I'm not going to give an entire treatise on things that can happen but do keep in mind the legal context.

?

Intellectual property

Copyright infringement - this is pretty clear, don't use without permission, and permission is easy to get. ?Commercial use can get you highly zapped.

Copyright loss - do watch those click through agreements

Patent infringement - watch what you copy and especially copy and sell

Sales

Contracts don't have to be in writing.

It's easy to become a "dealer"

Dealers get to be held to the standards in the UCC

Express and implied warranties - if you have no idea what that means, you are setting yourself up for trouble if you're selling

Performance

Let's just say you should read your contract to perform very carefully

If you're performing copyrighted works, then do be careful about the license held by the venue

If you're recording and distributing, think carefully

Torts

Civil wrongs. ?Defamation. ?Assault. ?All that nonsense. ?If you're playing in public and especially if there's alcohol, it's not as difficult as you think to get sucked into a civil suit.

Crimes

Victim of scam. ?Very easy. ?Think of yourself as a "mark" when you're dealing with strangers, especially remotely.

Selling in interstate commerce. ?Accidental misrepresentation can look like wire fraud.

Bailee?liability

Holding someone else's instrument for them for a few days? ?Insured against that?

Put your instrument into a shop? ?Are they insuring it?

Oops. ?The shop went bankrupt. ?Who owns the instrument you had in there?

?

?

Most of the issues I see are contract and fraud. ?But do be careful. ?I have dealt quietly and privately with a surprising number of musical instrument owners who have been completely blindsided by problems obvious to me. ?Usually they are totally, completely out of luck, and didn't need to end up there.

General rules:

  • Get it in writing
  • Writing doesn't have to be a contract
  • Electronic "signatures" count - see UCC
  • Too good to be true usually is (not always - I got a 17th C Italian fiddle in pieces for $225)
  • Listen to that warning tingle
  • Learn basic contract law
  • Learn basic tort law

Russia's Deputy PM to meet Rostelecom board next week

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's deputy prime minister will meet the board of Rostelecom next week amid reports he may suggest replacing the management of the state-controlled telecoms operator after the house of its CEO was searched in a fraud probe.

Aliya Samigullina, spokeswoman for Dvorkovich, told Reuters on Friday he plans to meet Rostelecom's board to discuss the reorganization of Rostelecom and state telecoms holding company Svyazinvest. She declined further comment.

Russia's Vedomosti newspaper earlier cited two sources as saying Dvorkovich might touch on the idea of replacing the company's management.

Russia's state development bank VEB along with Svyazinvest own a combined 53.2 percent stake in Rostelecom, which was created partly through Svyazinvest's telecoms assets.

Russian investigators in November searched the home of Alexander Provotorov, chief executive of Rostelecom, and the home of a minority shareholder, Konstantin Malofeyev.

The probe is linked to a $225 million loan by VTB to finance a business deal in 2007 in which, investigators suspect, Malofeyev was involved on both sides of the transaction. It follows a slew of scandals that has soured the mood of investors towards Russia.

Newspapers reported in October that Provotorov, who took the helm at Rostelecom in July 2010, could be replaced by Vadim Semyonov, the head of state telecoms holding company Svyazinvest who studied law with Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.

Rostelecom declined comment.

Strings of the World is a world-music festival focusing on string instruments initiated by the Indian classical violinist Sharat Chandra Srivastava and Steinar Larsen of the Trondheim Soloists (Trondheimsolistene). The first Strings of the World festival was successfully held on 16 November this year in Delhi, India.

Liu Guangyu made a deep impression on the audience with his charisma on the stage and impeccable mastery of the Chinese traditional string instrument Erhu. Self-composed works, and pieces of both traditional Chinese and western repertoire were performed together with the Trondheim Soloists. Passion, energy, charisma, and quality were words used to describe the concert.

More than being a renowned Erhu artist, Liu Guangyu is also director of Chongqing Symphony Orchestra and Chongqing Opera. The Trondheim Soloists, started out in 1988 by a group of student musicians, but has since then become one of the most interesting young ensembles performing on the international stage.

The collaboration between the Trondheim Soloists and Liu Guangyu started in 2010, when the Trondheim Soloists were touring China in connection with the Shanghai World Expo. Their first performance together with Liu Guangyu was a Norwegian-Chinese friendship concert in Chongqing, as S?r-Tr?ndelag County where the Trondheim Soloists are based, and Chongqing Municipality, where Liu come from, have a friendship agreement. Both Liu Guangyu and the Trondheim Soloists now look forward to continue their musical collaboration in future performances together.

Prelate: US bishops will oppose immigration reform that does not ...

CWN - December 06, 2012

Addressing a conference devoted to immigration policy and advocacy, Archbishop Wilton Gregory of Atlanta said that the bishops of the United States will oppose immigration-reform proposals that do not offer a path to citizenship.

?Some in the debate have suggested that undocumented persons be given legal status, but not an opportunity to earn citizenship,? he said. ?This is a position that the US bishops will resist. We will argue against the creation of a permanent underclass in this country, where certain parts of our population do not have the rights that others do.?

?Our nation has been down this road before, with disastrous results,? he continued. ?As we know from our nation?s history, many persons, including Dr. King, have fought and died so that all persons can enjoy the full rights of citizenship. We cannot forsake this principle for the purpose of political expediency.?

?The US bishops will accept and support reasonable enforcement measures, since, as I mentioned earlier, it is part of the right of a sovereign to ensure the integrity of its borders and protect the common good of its citizens,? he added. ?However, such measures must respect basic human rights and dignity, as imbued by our Creator, and include basic due process protections for immigrants and their families.?

In his talk ? which took place at a conference sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Catholic Legal Immigration Network ? Archbishop Gregory linked support for immigration reform to Blessed John XXIII?s 1963 encyclical Pacem in Terris.

?We support adherence to civil law and we continue to recognize the right of sovereign nations to the integrity of their borders in order to foster the common good,? Archbishop Gregory said. ?However, this right is not absolute. Nations, especially the rich nations of the world, have an obligation to the universal common good, as articulated by Pope John XXIII in Pacem in Terris, and thus should seek to accommodate migration to the greatest extent possible when migration is necessary for the good of other human beings. The fact that so many migrants are dying in their efforts to meet basic human needs by crossing deserts and risking their lives suggests that there are human needs driving migration to the United States and we are obligated to address those needs through public policies here and in other countries.?

(AP) ? New satellite images indicate that snow may have slowed North Korea's rocket launch preparations, but that Pyongyang could still be ready for liftoff starting Monday.

South Korean media reports this week quoted unnamed officials in Seoul as saying North Korea had mounted all three stages of the Unha rocket on the launch pad by Wednesday. But snow may have prevented Pyongyang from finishing its work by then, according to the GeoEye satellite images from Tuesday scrutinized by analysts for the websites 38 North and North Korea Tech and shared Friday with The Associated Press.

The analysis and images provide an unusually detailed public look at North Korea's cloaked preparations for a launch that the United Nations, Washington, Seoul and others say is a cover for a test of technology for a missile that could be used to target the United States.

The launch preparations have been magnified as an issue because of their timing: Both Japan and South Korea are gearing up to hold elections this month, and President Barack Obama will be inaugurated for his second term in office in January.

North Korea, for its part, says it has a right to pursue a peaceful space program and will launch a satellite into orbit sometime between Monday and Dec. 22. That launch window comes as North Korea marks the Dec. 17 death of leader Kim Jong Un's father, Kim Jong Il. North Korea is also celebrating the centennial of the birth of Kim Jong Un's grandfather, national founder Kim Il Sung.

Images from Dec. 1 showed no rocket at the launch pad, but by Tuesday North Koreans were seen working under a dark canvas, according to the analysis by 38 North, the website for the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, and the North Korea Tech website, which collaborated with 38 North on the report.

The analysis contradicts South Korean media reports saying the rocket stages were set up by Wednesday, the websites said, because North Korea took longer ? four days ? to erect a similar rocket before a failed launch attempt in April.

Snowfall on Dec. 3 may have also temporarily stopped work at the site, according to the analysis written by Nick Hansen, a retired expert in imagery technology with more than 40 years of national intelligence experience.

North Korea has a long history of developing ballistic missiles, but in four attempts since 1998 has not successfully completed the launch of a three-stage rocket. It has also conducted two nuclear tests, intensifying worry over how its rocket technology could be used in the future, particularly if it masters how to attach a nuclear warhead to a missile.

A senior South Korean government official told foreign reporters in Seoul on Friday that North Korea has been making technical preparations for a nuclear test and could theoretically conduct one in a short period of time, but that it isn't clear when or if they will test. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, citing government rules.

Friday's analysis of the satellite images said North Korea can still be ready for liftoff Monday.

Based on its preparations for the April launch, which broke apart shortly after the rocket was fired, Pyongyang has to finish stacking its rocket stages only two to three days ahead of time ? meaning workers could finish by Saturday and still be ready for a launch on Monday, the analysis said.

North Korea may have chosen a 12-day launch period, which is more than twice as long as the April period, because it was worried about possible weather complications, the analysis said.

"Pyongyang's rocket scientists can't be happy about the increased technical risks of a wintertime test, but certainly appear to have taken every precaution necessary in order to launch the rocket on time," said Joel Wit, a former U.S. State Department official and editor of 38 North.

A rocket can be launched during snowfall, but lightning, strong wind and freezing temperatures could stall a liftoff, said Lee Chang-jin, an aerospace professor at Seoul's Konkuk University.

North Korea's launch plan is meant to show the world its capability to build missiles, U.S. Pacific forces commander Adm. Samuel Locklear said Thursday. The United States has moved extra ships with ballistic missile defense capabilities toward the region, officials said.

The U.S., Japan and South Korea say they'll seek U.N. Security Council action if the launch goes ahead in defiance of existing resolutions. The council condemned April's launch and ordered seizure of assets of three North Korean state companies linked to financing, exporting and procuring weapons and missile technology.

On Friday, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda visited a Tokyo military facility to inspect Patriot Advanced Capability-3 missile interceptors being readied to intercept a North Korean rocket if it falls on Japanese territory.

The commander of American troops in Japan, Lt. Gen. Salvatore Angelella, said this week that his troops are closely monitoring activity in North Korea as it prepares for the launch.

Thread: Simple oak change bowl - Family Woodworking

Ryan,

If the wooden floor were darker, I would say you took that pic in our house between the tile and Myrna's office. Oh, no dogs as in pic 2.

No matter how you got there; it is a neat bowl. I'll bet it gets used a lot.

My very first bowl stays on the staircase on the 8th step up. It captures things like earrings and watches after going out. Later in the day they get carried on up to their proper home. It IS a very well used small bowl.

Enjoy,

Jim

Jury selection to continue in Stanford fraud trial (AP)

HOUSTON ? Jury selection has ended for the day in the oft-delayed trial of jailed Texas financier R. Allen Stanford, who is accused of bilking investors out of $7 billion in a vast Ponzi scheme.

A federal judge spent Monday questioning 80 potential jurors.

The judge said more time was needed and jury selection would resume Tuesday.

Opening statements are expected to start Tuesday afternoon.

Stanford's attorneys have said they expect him to testify.

Stanford was indicted more than 2 1/2 years ago, but his trial was delayed while he was treated at a prison hospital for an addiction to an anti-anxiety drug.

Prosecutors say Stanford funded a lavish lifestyle with the money of investors. His financial empire stretched from the U.S. to Latin America and the Caribbean.

He denies wrongdoing.

'Extinct' monkey rediscovered in Borneo by new expedition

Friday, January 20, 2012

An international team of scientists has found one of the rarest and least known primates in Borneo, Miller's Grizzled Langur, a species which was believed to be extinct or on the verge of extinction. The team's findings, published in the American Journal of Primatology, confirms the continued existence of this endangered monkey and reveals that it lives in an area where it was previously not known to exist.

Miller's Grizzled Langur (Presbytis hosei canicrus) is part of the small primate genus Presbytis, found across Borneo, Sumatra, Java and the Thai-Malay Peninsula. In Borneo, P.h. canicrus is only found in a small corner of the county's north east and its habitat has suffered from fires, human encroachment and conversion of land for agriculture and mining.

The team's expedition took to them to Wehea Forest in East Kalimantan, Borneo, a large 38,000 ha area of mostly undisturbed rainforest. Wehea contains at least nine known species of non-human primate, including the Bornean orangutan and gibbon.

"Discovery of P.h canicrus was a surprise since Wehea Forest lies outside of this monkey's known range. Future research will focus on estimating the population density for P.h. canicrus in Wehea and the surrounding forest," said Brent Loken, from Simon Fraser University Canada. "Concern that the species may have gone extinct was first raised in 2004, and a search for the monkey during another expedition in 2008 supported the assertion that the situation was dire."

By conducting observations at mineral licks where animals congregate and setting up camera traps in several locations, the expedition confirmed that P. h canicrus continues to survive in areas west of its previously recorded geographic range. The resulting photos provide the first solid evidence demonstrating that its geographic range extends further than previously thought.

"It was a challenge to confirm our finding as there are so few pictures of this monkey available for study," said Loken. "The only description of Miller's Grizzled Langur came from museum specimens. Our photographs from Wehea are some of the only pictures that we have of this monkey."

"East Kalimantan can be a challenging place to conduct research, given the remoteness of many remaining forested areas, so it isn't surprising that so little is known about this primate," said Dr. Stephanie Spehar, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. "We are very grateful to our local partners. This discovery represents the hard work, dedication, and collaboration of Western and Indonesian scientists, students, NGOs, as well as local communities and government."

"While our finding confirms the monkey still exists in East Kalimantan, there is a good chance that it remains one of the world's most endangered primates," concluded Loken. "I believe it is a race against time to protect many species in Borneo. It is difficult to adopt conservation strategies to protect species when we don't even know the extent of where they live. We need more scientists in the field working on understudied species such as Miller's Grizzled Langur, clouded leopards and sun bears."

Power of Europe's boardrooms captured in new book (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? For 15 years, New York-based Dutch photographer Jacqueline Hassink has been making her mark with global art projects, covering subjects as diverse as Haute Couture fitting rooms in Paris, the gardens of Kyoto and the boardrooms of Europe's leading corporations.

Magnum photographer Martin Parr declared Hassink's "The Table of Power" (1996), in which she photographed the boardrooms of 40 multinational companies, one of the most important photo books of the 20th century. Her new sequel "The Table of Power 2," revisits companies from the 2009 Fortune Global 500 list, documenting the impact of the economic downturn.

Hassink recently spoke to Reuters about "The Table of Power 2" and another book "View, Kyoto." Publisher Hatje Cantz released "The Table of Power 2" in Europe and Asia on January 17. D.A.P. will publish the book in the U.S. in March 2012..

Q: You made "The Table of Power" sixteen years ago. What drew you to this topic and why did you revisit the subject?

A: "I took part in a photography workshop in Oslo in 1993 and I was asked to pick a Norwegian book and choose one word to work with. I chose "table" in Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt." I projected this taxonomy as a map onto the city of Oslo, then looked for other tables in Norwegian society. That led to the idea of creating a map of Europe, by photographing its most potent meeting places: the meeting tables of the boards of directors of Europe's largest corporations. I wanted to reveal the centers of economic power, the meeting tables where top executives were seated, making decisions upon which millions of people depend. In 2008 with the onset of the worst recession since the 1930s, I decided to look once again at Europe's economic landscape."

Q: What do tables reflect in business and society?

A: "Tables symbolize the core of our society. They are a fascinating symbol of how we organize our private and public lives. Within families, tables show a hierarchy. The father heads the table and the mother sits closest to the kitchen. In corporations, boardroom tables represent a similar power play. CEOs usually sit at an oval or rectangular table at the head, or in the middle of the longest stretch. Ideally they face the entrance, which is the most secure place in the room."

Q: How does the value of these companies compare with 16 years ago?

A: "The top 40 in Europe in the first project had total revenues of $1,194,368.2 million. The top 40 from Europe in the second project had total revenues of $5,252,710.9 million.

Q: What else has changed in boardrooms since the last visit?

A: "The technology and the lack of ashtrays. Boardrooms can be highly complex these days with a lot of built-in technology. A striking new feature is the presence of BlackBerry trays."

Q: Which companies are still on the original list?

A: "BASF, BP, Daimler, EDF, ENI, Fiat, Nestl?, PSA Peugeot Citro?n, Royal Dutch Shell, Siemens, Total and Volkswagen. I only visited three companies twice -- ENI, Siemens, and Volkswagen -- where the same spokesperson accompanied me.

Q: Your project represents the first time in Europe that boardrooms have been photographed and made public. Do you consider this a journalistic endeavor?

A: "I consider it an artistic endeavor, simply because it is an artistic project and not a journalistic project."

Q: Why did you decide to include in "The Table of Power 2" the banks and financial institutions?

A: "Since major banks and financial service companies have played an enormous role in the economy's downward spiral, and thus our immediate social coexistence, they too were included in 'The Table of Power 2,' alongside industrial, multinational corporations. I simply observed the economic landscape of Europe in the year 2009, and I could not do the project without adding the banks nor not include Russian corporations in the project."

Q: Your work covers spiritual and material ideas, and you recently filmed the monks and their gardens in Kyoto. Why?

A: "My work develops over time. I travel extensively and ideas develop usually while traveling. Something catches my eye, which I observe in several continents. That is usually how a new body of work starts. I am interested in the relationship between private and public space in Zen Buddhist temples and gardens. I have been working with these monks since 2004 on a photography project called "View, Kyoto" and over time I have learned a lot from them. ... I talked with them about the meaning of space and their relationship to nature. As a person I have become more balanced. They taught me how to live life in a Buddhist way.

Q: What was your most challenging project?

A: "The hardest project was by far 'Arab Domains' (2005-06). Over two years I visited 18 Arab countries, portraying 36 top female executives. For almost every country I needed to get a visa and I traveled for weeks through the Middle East and North Africa."

Q: What are you working on?

A: "I just finished 'View, Kyoto' (2004-11) and I am making another film in Kyoto in 2012. In 2013, my book "View, Kyoto" will be published. I am planning to continue working on fashion world projects, like "Haute Couture Fitting Rooms, Paris" (2003-10) and a new project in China."

Bruce Springsteen Returns With New Album, Wrecking Ball

Springsteen's first album since the death of E Street sax man Clarence Clemons is due in March.

Late last year, in a message posted on his official site, Bruce Springsteen let fans know that he and the E Street Band were putting the finishing touches on a new album — their first since the death of iconic sax man Clarence Clemons — and concluded by promising "we'll get back to you real soon."

Well, now he has. On Thursday (January 19), Springsteen announced a brand-new album, Wrecking Ball, and premiered the first single, "We Take Care of Our Own," over on his site. The album, due March 5, was produced by Ron Aniello and Springsteen, features 11 tracks, and, according to longtime manager Jon Landau, finds the Boss tackling decidedly of-the-moment issues.

"Bruce has dug down as deep as he can to come up with this vision of modern life," Landau said in a statement. "The lyrics tell a story you can't hear anywhere else, and the music is his most innovative of recent years ... The writing is some of the best of his career."

According to several reports, Wrecking Ball also boasts cameos from Rage Against the Machine guitarist (and fellow social activist) Tom Morello and former Pearl Jam drummer Matt Chamberlain, and is Springsteen's "angriest album," dealing with topics like economic injustice. It also reportedly features "unexpected textures — loops, electronic percussion ... influences and rhythms from hip-hop to Irish folk."

Springsteen and the E Street Band will promote the album with an extensive tour, but only European dates have been announced so far.

The track list for Bruce Springsteen's Wrecking Ball:

» "We Take Care of Our Own"
» "Easy Money"
» "Shackled and Drawn"
» "Jack of All Trades"
» "Death to My Hometown"
» "This Depression"
» "Wrecking Ball"
» "You've Got It"
» "Rocky Ground"
» "Land of Hope and Dreams"
» "We Are Alive"

Futures drop after GE, Google results (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures dipped on Friday, indicating the S&P 500 may snap a three-day win streak after GE and Google results fell short of expectations and as investors eyed Greek debt talks for signs of progress.

Google Inc (GOOG.O) shares slumped 7.8 percent to $589.73 in premarket trading after quarterly profit and revenue for the No. 1 Internet search engine missed Wall Street expectations on declining search advertising rates.

General Electric Co (GE.N) fell 2.6 percent to $18.65 after the largest U.S. conglomerate reported roughly flat profit from continuing operations, but revenues missed estimates.

Greece and its private bondholders were "converging towards" a long-awaited debt swap deal, a source said, with private bondholders possibly assuming a real loss of 65 percent to 70 percent. Hopes are that an agreement would prevent the nation from spiraling into bankruptcy and bring some stability to the debt-strained euro zone.

"We are now debating again how much of a haircut the bondholders of Greece are going to take and that is not happy news," said Kim Forrest, senior equity research analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group in Pittsburgh.

"That being said, let's see where things end up today because I thought at least three of the four tech companies had really good and strong results."

A strong outlook from International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N) and decent results from Intel Corp (INTC.O) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) signaled that corporate leaders were shaking off nervousness about economic growth and boosting technology spending.

Microsoft shares were up 2.7 percent to $28.89, and Intel edged up 0.7 percent to $25.80 premarket. IBM gained 2.7 percent to $185.38.

"The revenue is probably the most concerning thing. They are a bellwether and we are really interested to see what they see, especially in their industrial area, how the orders are," said Forrest.

S&P 500 futures fell 3.4 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures were off 14 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 3.25 points.

European shares slipped 0.3 percent early Friday after hitting 5-1/2 month highs in the previous session as major indexes neared "overbought" territory. Asian shares rose to fresh two-month highs as solid euro zone sovereign debt sales. (.EU)

Economic data on existing home sales was due from the National Association of Realtors for December at 10 a.m. (1500 GMT). Economists forecast a 4.65 million annual rate in December, versus 4.42 million in November.

Chinese factory activity likely fell for a third successive month in January, an early indicator showed, suggesting Beijing's pro-growth policies will remain in place despite early signs a downward drift was slowing.

U.S. stocks rose Thursday, sparked by results from Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) and Morgan Stanley (MS.N) and as the latest jobless claims dropped to a near four-year low.

China, UAE agree on currency swap

China and the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday signed a currency swap agreement worth 35 billion yuan, or about 5.54 billion US dollars, effective for 3 years.

According to People?s Bank of China, the deal was signed during Premier Wen Jiabao visit to the Middle East and is expected to boost the economy of both sides through lifting two-way trade and investment.

Trade between the two sides reached 32 billion dollars from January to November of last year, a sharp rise of nearly 40 percent in the same period of 2010.

The deal is the latest in a string of currency arrangements in recent years with key trading partners in a bid to boost the use of yuan for the direct settlement of international trade.

(AP) ? Greed on Wall Street set a new record, federal authorities said Wednesday as they unveiled a massive insider trading case charging a hedge fund co-founder with engineering a trade that earned a staggering $53 million in profits.

The illegal trade ? the largest transaction ever prosecuted in Manhattan ? was part of a $78 million scheme involving at least seven financial industry professionals, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara told a news conference.

"Today's charges illustrate something that should disturb all of us: They show that insider trading activity in recent times has, indeed, been rampant and routine and that this criminal behavior was known, encouraged and exploited by authority figures in several investment funds," Bharara said.

Of the $78 million, nearly $62 million was earned through tips provided by a Dell Inc. employee to a former Dell worker who spread the information among his friends at at least five investment houses, including three hedge funds. Bharara called it "a stunning portrait of organized corruption on a broad scale" and said it raised to 63 the number of people arrested in a government crackdown on insider trading. So far, there have been 56 convictions.

"Each wave of charges and arrests seems to produce leads to lead us to the next phase," said FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge Janice K. Fedarcyk.

She said the arrests were not the last in a 4-year-old probe dubbed Operation Perfect Hedge.

"If you are engaged in insider trading, what distinguishes you from the dozens who have been charged is not that you haven't been caught; it's that you haven't been caught yet," she said.

Bharara called the seven men arrested in the latest crackdown part of "a criminal club whose purpose was profit and whose members regularly bartered lucrative inside information.

"It was a club where everyone scratched everyone else's back," he said. Court documents, he added, "paint a stunning portrait of organized corruption on a broad scale."

The criminal complaint in U.S. District Court in Manhattan charged four of the men with conspiracy to commit securities fraud and securities fraud, among other charges. Three analysts charged in the other documents have already pleaded guilty and are cooperating with the government.

The insider trading plot was noteworthy for its size. Last month, hedge fund founder Raj Rajaratnam began serving an 11-year prison term ? the longest ever given in an insider trading case ? for a scheme that prosecutors said produced as much as $75 million in profits on dozens of trades over a multi-year period. That prosecution resulted in more than two dozen convictions and led to a spinoff probe that produced even more arrests.

Bharara said the case he announced Wednesday was comparable to the one brought against Rajaratnam, of Sri Lanka. He highlighted its size, saying the co-conspirators netted more than $61.8 million in illegal profits based on trades of a single stock from 2008 through 2009. The Securities and Exchange Commission said the profits, combined with $15.7 million earned on trades involving Nvidia Corp., reached nearly $78 million.

SEC Enforcement Director Robert Khuzami said it was disturbing that the case involved high level executives at "some of the largest and most sophisticated hedge funds in the country."

He said there was nothing wrong with fast-trading hedge funds but they are already characterized by a lack of transparency and can pose a "grave threat to the integrity of the markets and the level playing field that is the foundation of those markets" when they use their considerable market power to influence those who possess inside information.

The SEC said the case involved closely associated hedge fund traders at Stamford, Conn.-based Diamondback Capital Management LLC and Greenwich, Conn.-based Level Global Investors LP.

Anthony Chiasson, a co-founder at former hedge fund group Level Global Investors, was among four men arrested Wednesday. He surrendered to the FBI in New York, where he lives.

In court papers, he was credited with a starring role in the securities fraud. Authorities said a hedge fund analyst fed Chiasson inside information about an upcoming announcement of Dell's earnings for the first and second quarters of 2008, allowing Chiasson and others at his hedge fund to make approximately $57 million in illegal profits through trades. Inside information about Dell earnings resulted in $3.8 million in illegal profits at another hedge fund and $1 million in illegal profits at a third hedge fund, the complaint said. The Dell inside information also allowed an investment firm to avoid losses of approximately $78,000, authorities said.

Bail for Chiasson was set at $2.5 million after Assistant U.S. Attorney David S. Leibowitz told a magistrate judge at Chiasson's initial court appearance in Manhattan that the allegations against him were "staggering" and, if successfully proved, could result in a prison sentence of at least 10 years. He said the $53 million Chiasson earned for his hedge fund by shorting Dell stock on early word that its earnings would disappoint was the largest illegal trade ever cited in a criminal case in federal court in Manhattan.

Leibowitz said it took Rajaratnam six years and dozens of trades to accumulate the $70 million in profits alleged by the government in his case. The prosecutor requested a $5 million bail, saying Chiasson was worth at least $40 million and had earned as much as $11 million in a year at his hedge fund.

Chiasson's lawyer, Gregory Morvillo, said his client knew the government was after him when agents raided his office 14 months ago and looked forward to defending himself.

"He didn't do anything wrong, and he wants an opportunity to clear his name," Morvillo said.

Jon Horvath, an analyst at Sigma Capital Management, an affiliate of hedge fund SAC Capital Advisors in Manhattan, was arrested at his New York City home while Todd Newman, a hedge fund portfolio manager, was arrested in Needham, Mass. Analyst Danny Kuo, of San Marino, California. also was arrested.

Among those who have pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and securities fraud and are cooperating in the case was Sandeep Goyal, of Princeton, New Jersey, who worked from the summer of 2006 through May 2007 for Dell at its corporate headquarters in Round Rock, Texas, and obtained inside information from employees of Dell after he began working as an associate analyst for a global asset management firm in Manhattan, court papers said.

According to court papers, Goyal benefited from his relationship with a co-conspirator who worked in Dell's investor relations department from March 2007 through March 2009 and in its corporate development office from March 2009 through April 2010. Authorities said a hedge fund with $4 billion in assets in 2009 paid Goyal about $175,000 for providing insider information about Dell.

Another cooperator was identified as Jesse Tortora, of Pembroke Pines, Florida. The SEC said Goyal tipped Tortora who then tipped several others, leading to insider trades on behalf of the Diamondback and Level Global hedge funds.

The third cooperator was identified as Spyridon (Sam) Adondakis, a Level Global analyst. The SEC said he tipped Chiasson, his manager. Adondakis also lived in New York City.

"These are not low-level employees succumbing to temptation by seizing a chance opportunity," Khuzami said. "These are sophisticated players who built a corrupt network to systematically and methodically obtain and exploit illegal inside information again and again at the expense of law-abiding investors and the integrity of the markets."

FBI agent David Makol said in court papers that the government built its case through information provided by the three cooperators, consensually recorded conversations, court-authorized wiretaps, telephone records, trading records, electronic communications, documents provided by a cooperator and other documents obtained from two hedge funds. The hedge funds were not identified in court papers.

Messages seeking comment left with lawyers for the other defendants were not immediately returned.

In a letter to investors, Diamondback Advisors co-chief investment officers Richard Schimel and Larry Sapanski called the actions by prosecutors and the SEC "an important step towards putting this matter behind us."

The company has fully cooperated with authorities since learning of the inquiry and believed the "fruits of that cooperation" were reflected in the charges announced Wednesday, they said. Newman was placed on leave immediately after the Nov. 22, 2010, search, and Tortora resigned from the firm in April 2010, they added.
